Toy for Left-Handed Children
A toy which is suitable for both left-handed and right-handed children.

Play for children is their “everyday work”. Study of this area has so far totally disregarded the implications of left-handedness. However, it is vital from an educational point of view to consider what is appropriate for left-handed children to ensure that they have fun and joy with their toys.

Essential criteria for a toy to suit both left and right-handed children are:

  • Support for left-handed children without giving this a “special status”.
  • Both left-handed and right-handed children can play with the same toy without being at a disadvantage.
  • A toy should only be made in one form – not different versions for left and right-handers.

The demand that not only toy manufacturers but also designers should take into account the needs of left-handed children is considered in detail for the first time in the article by Susanne von Rotberg “Spielzeug für linkshändige Kinder”.

The Annual Left-Handers’ Toy of the Year Award should be a step in the right direction. The prize winner will be decided by a jury of expert left-hander advisiors (using the methodology of Dr. Johanna Barbara Sattler) on International Left-Handers Day, 13 August 2004.
